Crafting a Successful Thesis Statement
The guiding statement to every essay you write is the thesis statement. It’s a contract between you and your readers agreeing that you will not waste their time with disorganized sentences, but that you will address a specific topic in a certain way.
For a paragraph, it is a simple topic sentence that states what you will write about, what resources you will use, and what you want the reader to get from your paragraph. Something like: “There are several habits that good writers cultivate, but the most important is the habit of reviewing and revising.”
But, for an essay, your organizing sentence is your thesis statement – and this takes a specific form in order to bring order to your essay.
- Your thesis statement should be:
- a single statement
- that concisely presents the topic,
- tells what your position is on the topic, and
- gives three directions, aspects, or levels you will research and write about on this topic.
- Again, your thesis statement should have three reasons, responses, solutions, or directions, comparisons, effects, etc., of research you intend to address. (An essay with five or more paragraphs will have three elements researched, analyzed and covered in a balanced way in your essay.)
- This statement should be clear and give organization to your paper – think of it as your road map for the essay.
- Your thesis statement should not be a question.
- It should not be an idea or thought you want to pursue.
- It should be one strong sentence with concrete direction and focus on what you will seek to accomplish in your paper.
- The thesis statement’s first word is critical. Often you can start your thesis statement with a conjunction that will indicate what kind of essay you’ve chosen (compare/contrast, informational, cause/effect, etc.) See my earlier Writer’s Hack on using conjunctions in your thesis statement.
- Here’s a great example from a first-year composition student (FYI, she scored an A for this one) . This is for a Persuasive Compare/Contrast essay:
“While Stand-Your-Ground laws are controversial and considered by many to be a danger to public safety, research indicates they offer a vital extension to our self-defense laws, lower crime rates, and dissuade vigilantism.”

(Opening Conjunction) While (Topic) Stand-Your-Ground laws (Position) are controversial and considered by many to be a danger to public safety, (Three Research Directions) research indicates (1) they offer a vital extension to our self-defense laws, (2) lower crime rates, and (3) dissuade vigilantism.
If you are writing a Literary Research or Critique Essay, the rules change a little depending on the assignment instructions or your personal goals and purpose. Often, the literary elements become key to the thesis statement and point back to the theme you are exploring. Here is an example of a literary critique thesis statement:
O. Henry’s very personal story, The Gift of the Magi, explores the theme of sacrificial love through his use of dialog, imagery, and irony.
The subject, theme, and three elements of literature become the focus of this essay.
Your statement for your paper should closely follow this format. If you follow this format, I will know what you want to pursue, and you will have your “outline” statement.
- Here is a visual for an Informative Essay (less persuasive, but still very organized);
“Sandwich meat aficionados love Spam because it is portable, can be easily found, and can be prepared in many different ways.”
- The reader knows I will write about spam, that I probably love it, and that I will research and write about three things: 1) how portable it is, 2) where it can be found, and 3) several delicious ways it can be served.
